Maestro Brewington

 

John Brewington is the Fine Arts Coordinator for Virginia Beach City Public Schools and is in his 9th season as the Music Director and Conductor for the Tidewater Winds.  His career in public education has included positions as director of bands at Kempsville Middle School in Virginia Beach and as adjunct professor at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.  Mr. Brewington is past president of the Virginia Association of Music Education Administrators and is an active adjudicator, clinician, performer, and conductor.  He served on the conducting staff of the Mid-Atlantic Middle School Band Camp and has served as Guest Conductor at All-County, All-District, and All-City Bands throughout Virginia.  He has performed for over 28 years with the Virginia Symphony and has dozens of compact disc recordings to his credit.  The list of stars he has played with include such luminaries, as Steve Lawrence & Edie Gorme, Doc Severinsen, Victor Borge, Mitzi Gaynor, Roger Williams, Rich Little, Marvin Hamlish, Carol Channing, Bruce Hornsby, Rosemary Clooney, Peter Nero, Glen Campbell, The Smothers Brothers, and The Moody Blues.
 

Mr. Brewington received his Bachelor of Music Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, a Master of Music Performance degree from East Carolina University, and his Educational Specialist Degree from The George Washington University.  Under Mr. Brewington’s leadership Virginia Beach City Public Schools was named as one of the Best Communities for Music Education in America by the NAMM Foundation for two consecutive years.  He was named Teacher of the Year at Kempsville Middle School for the 1999 school year and has twice been recognized in “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.”  He was presented with an Alli Award from the Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton Roads in 2007 for his outstanding contributions to the cultural life of the region.  In 2011 he received a special commendation from Virginia Beach Mayor William Sessoms for his program 9/11, Ten Years Later, and was most recently inducted into the National School Bandmaster’s Fraternity at the Virginia Music Educators Conference.  He resides in Virginia Beach, with his wife Karen and their two children John Jr. and Colin.
